The Jac Lewis Foundation has been appointed by the Welsh Government to deliver a vital new service aimed at supporting those affected by suicide. In honour of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Welsh Government has introduced the National Advisory and Liaison Service (NALS) along with updated guidance to provide crucial support.
NALS is designed to offer fast, compassionate assistance and ensure regular contact with a dedicated liaison officer for as long as needed. Liz Thomas-Evans, CEO of the Jac Lewis Foundation, expressed gratitude for the opportunity: “We are profoundly grateful for the chance to deliver the National Advisory and Liaison Service in Wales. This service will ensure that vital support reaches individuals and families impacted by suicide, working collaboratively with bereavement services to provide the guidance and resources needed during the most challenging times.”
Thomas-Evans reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to making a significant difference: “We are dedicated to helping build a more compassionate and supportive Wales.”
The launch follows recent data from the Office for National Statistics showing an increase in suicide rates in Wales, rising from 12.5 per 100,000 people in 2022 to 14 per 100,000 in 2023.
Wales’ mental health minister, Sarah Murphy, praised the service as an “invaluable first port of call” for those in need of support.
