Reflecting on a Year of Support and Hope: 2024 in Review

As we welcome the new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on an incredible 2024 at the Jac Lewis Foundation. Over the past 12 months, we’ve worked tirelessly to deliver on our mission of providing “Mental Health – Support without Barriers”.

Thanks to your continued support, we’ve been able to offer help and hope to so many individuals and families across South West Wales. Here’s a look back at the highlights and achievements that defined our year.

A Year of Unwavering Support

In 2024, the Jac Lewis Foundation received an astounding 1,818 referrals, with 1,300 individuals bravely seeking help through self-referrals. We were privileged to support over 230 children under the age of 18 and welcomed more than 1,200 visitors to our Community Hub – 206 of them joining us for the very first time.

Our services have touched countless lives, offering free and confidential support for those facing bereavement, depression, trauma, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm. The heartfelt feedback we’ve received from those we’ve helped speaks volumes about the impact of our work:

  • “It’s improved [my life] dramatically… I really needed the support, and it was very good and really helpful.”
  • “It’s helped me heal, which wouldn’t have happened without the help.”
  • “Stopped feeling so alone. It’s given me someone to reach out to. Less isolated. Less lonely.”
  • “Quite possibly wouldn’t be here without it.”
  • “Helped me realise I am not alone.”

Through our work, we’ve seen the power of connection and community in transforming lives. These stories remind us why we remain steadfast in our mission to break down barriers to mental health support.

Milestones and Memories

We started the year with the launch of our Wellbeing Group for Over 55s at Llyn Llech Owain Country Park in February. Meeting on the last Friday of each month, this group has become a haven for learning about wellbeing through nature. Participants have shared how these sessions have helped them feel more connected, supported, and in tune with the natural world.

Spring saw incredible feats of endurance and creativity, from Connor Thomas completing four Ironman challenges in March to the launch of Cammy’s first book, helped by his creator Zac from Ysgol Saron.  Meanwhile, Ammanford Cricket Club scaled Pen y Fan in their cricket kit, showcasing their commitment to mental health awareness and raising vital funds for our work.

In April, Joseff Rees ran the London Marathon with cheers and support from family, friends, and our mascot, Cammy. This achievement not only raised awareness for mental health but also demonstrated the strength of our community coming together to support a shared cause.

In May, Pontarddulais Fire Station held an open day, with the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) providing free catering throughout the event. Visitors were invited to make charitable donations for the catering services, with all proceeds supporting the Jac Lewis Foundation. This day highlighted the incredible community spirit and generosity that continues to fuel our mission.

Summer brought Callum Williams’ trek around Snowdonia in July and the August launch of our partnership with Swansea’s City Health Local Cluster Collaborative (LCC). By bringing wellbeing support directly to GP practices, this initiative has provided individuals with quicker access to counselling and workshops, enhancing their overall mental health outcomes.

Our continued collaboration with Swansea City Football Club has also been a cornerstone of our success this year. The One Stop Mental Health Hub, which runs every Friday at the Swansea.com Stadium, has provided a vital resource for individuals seeking immediate mental health support. This partnership has been instrumental in creating a welcoming and accessible environment for those in need, ensuring that help is always close at hand.

National Recognition and Celebrations

September marked a significant milestone with the launch of the National Advisory and Liaison Service. Commissioned by the Welsh Government, this service extends our suicide support across Wales, reinforcing our mission to offer help wherever it’s needed most. The programme has already had a meaningful impact, providing a lifeline to those in crisis.

On October 10th, World Mental Health Day, we celebrated our 5th birthday. Founded in 2019, the Jac Lewis Foundation has grown immensely, thanks to the dedication of our team and the generosity of our supporters. The day was filled with reflection and gratitude, as we looked back on five years of unwavering service to our community.

November and December closed the year with warmth and festive cheer. Highlights included Delyth Burroughes’ trek up Mount Sinai in Egypt, Steven O’Neill stepping into the boxing ring for the first time, and the launch of our Winter Wellbeing group, Golau yn y Gaeaf. This weekly group has been a beacon of hope during the darker months, offering participants a space to connect, share, and find solace.

Our Christmas Card competition brought creativity and joy, with over 400 entries showcasing the artistic talents of young people in our community. Father Christmas himself visited the Brodawel Christmas Lights, spreading festive cheer and reinforcing the spirit of giving and togetherness.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

The work we do would not be possible without the generosity of individuals, businesses, and organisations that believe in our mission. A heartfelt thank you to the #4N;cky Foundation, Gareth Day Foundation, Ysgol Feithrin Rhydaman, and countless others who contributed in 2024. Your support has been invaluable.
