Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 – Celebrating Community

At the Jac Lewis Foundation, we’re proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, taking place from 12 to 18 May, and led by our friends at the Mental Health Foundation. This year’s theme – community – is something that’s close to our hearts here in Ammanford and across South West Wales.

Why Community Matters for Our Mental Health

When life gets tough, it’s often the people around us – family, friends, neighbours, colleagues – who help us through. But community goes beyond our closest circles. It’s about feeling part of something bigger. Whether that’s a local sports team, a walking group, your workplace, or even a regular catch-up in the local café – these moments of connection really do matter.

A strong, positive community can:

  • Remind us that we’re not alone
  • Give us a sense of belonging and safety
  • Offer support when we need it most
  • Bring purpose and joy to our everyday lives

Here in Ammanford, we see these benefits in action every day – from the volunteers who give up their time to help others, to the support groups that meet regularly to offer a listening ear. It’s the kind of care and kindness that can lift someone’s day, and in some cases, change lives.

We All Have a Part to Play

It’s easy to underestimate the value of community, especially when life feels busy or overwhelming. But small actions – a chat with a neighbour, checking in on a friend, or taking part in a local event – can have a powerful impact on our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.

Not sure where to start? Here are a few simple ways to get involved:

  • Join a local club or activity group
  • Volunteer for a local charity or event
  • Attend community events – even just popping in makes a difference!
  • Reach out to someone who may be feeling isolated

The Jac Lewis Foundation: Here for Our Community

Our mission has always been to support the mental health and wellbeing of our local community. From offering counselling and emotional support, to providing safe spaces for young people and families, we’re here to help people feel connected, supported, and valued.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we invite everyone in our community to take a moment to reflect on the people, places, and networks that help you feel grounded. And if you’re looking to find connection, we’re here to help you take that first step.

Let’s celebrate the power of community, not just this week, but every week.
